Fed: ATSIC was a failure and we don't need a replacement: Nelson

Federal Opposition leader BRENDAN NELSON's rejected calls for a new national body to
represent Australia's Indigenous people.

Dr NELSON says the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission was a failed
experiment and a new body could only hinder the flow of funding into indigenous communities.

Indigenous leaders are expected to raise the issue of a new peak body at the 2020 Summit
to be held in Canberra this weekend.

ATSIC was abolished in 2005.
