NSW: Newcastle disease clean up continues
SYDNEY, April 8 AAP - Chicken manure will today be removed from a central coast poultry
farm infected with the highly contagious Newcastle disease as efforts continue to contain the
outbreak to the one property.
New South Wales Agriculture finished slaughtering and incinerating 27,000 chickens earlier
this week and expect cleaning up operations to continue for another week, spokesman Col Begg
said.
"Today the litter is being vacuumed up and then disinfestation of the sheds themselves with
a detergent based liquid will take place," Mr Begg said.
Monitoring of the infected Mangrove Mountain farm and 27 other nearby poultry operations,
which have shown no signs of the disease, would continue, he said.
The highly contagious viral disease, which causes the rapid death of birds, was positively
identified at the pullet-rearing farm of Frank Pirovic and Sons last week.
