VIC: More cars: less pollution on Melbourne roads report

Melbourne roads are busier than they were in 1990 but the cars are creating less pollution.

The same number of trips every day are now made on bikes, as on buses and trams put
together; and the most common piece of litter is a cigarette butt.

These are some of the findings of the latest report on environmental health, air emissions,
transport, litter and biodiversity in Victoria's capital.

It has found an absolute decrease in car exhaust since 1990, despite a 16 per cent increase
in total vehicle kilometres travelled.

And the report says 85-95 per cent of total bird species recorded in most municipalities
are native.

The report is the second to come from a research partnership between the Australian
Institute of Urban Studies, 13 Melbourne councils, the Municipal Association of Victoria, the
Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Parks Victoria and the Environmental
Protection Agency.
